Exede – Award Winning Satellite Broadband

ViaSat, the company that owns and operates Exede Internet has been in the telecommunications business for 29 years.

Based in Carlsbad, California, ViaSat launched the ViaSat-1 satellite that powers Exede in 2011. In January of 2012, Exede Internet service began. Prior to that, the company’s satellite Internet service was WildBlue, a satellite Internet service ViaSat had helped develop and later purchased. Following the acquisition of WildBlue, the federal government provided stimulus funding to the company in order to encourage its broadband expansion into rural areas. With over 687,000 subscribers, Exede is the second largest satellite Internet service provider in the United States. It has more than 3,300 employees and is undergoing substantial expansion.

Current & Future Satellites

Today, Exede has 3 satellites, and 17 gateways. It has invested more than $1 billion in satellite technology. In fact, Exede has more bandwidth than any other provider in the satellite Internet industry. Its satellite, ViaSat -1 uses 72 spotbeams, however right now those beams are limited, as each one has a cap in the number of users that can access it.

Exede is planning to launch the ViaSat 2 satellite in 2016, with improved beams that are more open, allowing greater bandwidth allocation for higher traffic areas. This new satellite has seven times more geographical coverage than the current satellite. In addition to expanding capacity of the service, it will also extend the coverage.
